Zyrtec is a prescription medication that treats
indoor and outdoor allergies.
How Zyrtec works
When you come in contact with something that you
are allergic to, your body produces a chemical called histamine.
Histamine causes unpleasant allergy symptoms like sneezing, itching,
and runny nose. Zyrtec (Cetirizine HCl) helps relieve allergy symptoms
by blocking the action of histamine in your body.
How to take Zyrtec
Zyrtec (Cetirizine HCl) can be taken with or without
food. The recommended daily dose of Zyrtec is one 5 mg tablet or
10 mg tablet a day.
Zyrtec precautions
Zyrtec (Cetirizine HCl) may cause dizziness or
drowsiness in some patients. Therefore, use caution when driving
or operating heavy machinery. While taking Zyrtec you should limit
your alcohol consumption. Alcohol can increase drowsiness and dizziness.
If you take monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) to treat depression
you must wait at least14 days after quitting before you can begin
treatment with Zyrtec.
What to tell your doctor
Before you begin your treatment with Zyrtec (Cetirizine
HCl), be sure to tell your doctor about any prescription or nonprescription
medications you are taking. If you are pregnant or nursing DO NOT
take this medication without first consulting with your doctor.
To avoid complications with Zyrtec, tell your doctor if you have
kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, glaucoma, heart disease,
high blood pressure, thyroid disease, difficulty urinating or an
enlarged prostate.

In clinical trials Zyrtec (Cetirizine HCl) side
effects were mild to moderate and included dry mouth, drowsiness,
and sore throat.
